STAMPEDE

When they got back home, her father was already dressed up in a suit her mother had brought him, even if he had put it on reluctantly. He looked very elegant and was waiting impatiently for her by the front gate. She was surprised when he got close to the window before the car had barely even stopped out front. He seemed very overwhelmed.

“Thank God Monroe,” he said somewhat relieved, looking at Mikaela. For a moment she thought they were really late, and he was infuriated. “My old gal has broken down again. Can you wait for Mikaela to get ready and give us a ride to the restaurant?”

“Of course. It’d be a pleasure. Right, Steve?” he said looking at his brother sarcastically, knowing that it would produce sincere dread in him. He didn’t say anything, nodding gravely and then looking out the window furiously.

“Wonderful. Come on Mika,” her father said, opening the back door and helping her get out. “Your mother and sister went in a taxi. I’ve tried to get in touch with them, but I haven’t been able to. They must be somewhere without coverage. We have to move fast.”

“I’m coming, but don’t expect me to run with this,” she said a little annoyed by his impatience, with him almost tripping over her crutches.

“Come on in for a minute, while my daughter gets ready,” her father told the guys. “We can get to know each other better. I’ve never met a war hero,” he said with a certain tone of admiration to Monroe who had gotten out of the car. But Steve flat out refused and stayed inside, even though his brother was giving him a persistent look.

“It was just luck,” Monroe responded, a little ashamed by Steve’s unsociable attitude. “Get out Steve. It’ll just be for a minute.”

Steve crossed his arms and bowed his head like he usually did when something made him freeze up.

“Let him be, Monroe,” she said so he’d leave his brother alone. “You know he doesn’t like socializing with anyone. It’s nothing personal Dad. He’s just like that,” she told her father, so he wouldn’t take it the wrong way, knowing that he was especially interested in getting to know Steve better.

Mikaela left her father talking with Monroe downstairs, about the war he had been in, but Monroe seemed a little uncomfortable with that topic, changing it as soon as he could by asking her father what had happened with his van.

Once she entered her room, she found a note on the dress that was on her bed that said: We’ve changed it. This one’s better. The shoes match it well.”

It wasn’t the dress she had tried on that morning. This one was a lot more impressive, even though the cut was simpler. Strapless, and fitted in the waist with a full skirt and golden tulle beneath it. The fabric was embroidered with branches, red flowers, and very small blue jewels, and the slip was gold too.
